Abominable (2006) - Blu-ray

5 beersWho knew that Bigfoot was an overgrown peeping Tom? Someone did because, in the fully restored version of Abominable, fans get to see that hairy bastard spy on a showering girl and then, as she comes near the window to close it, witness him reach right in, pull her toward him, bend her BACKWARDS, and then tank her out through the window. OUCH.

There’s a lean and mean Sasquatch up there in them hills!  And that ass monkey really loves to munch and crunch on faces!

Abominable, written and directed by Ryan Schifrin, is an old school horror film that simply does not disappoint fans of the creature feature genre. And now, complete with a brand new 2K remaster from the film’s original 35mm print, this fantastic fright fest is part of the MVD Rewind Collection.  Featuring new supplemental items in a classy deluxe edition that is made masterful with a NEW CUT if the film, this release is all about showing the big tall bastard a whole hell of a lot of love.  Buy this one immediately.

"And, if the closing scene (again, one of the best!!) is any indication, the hills are indeed alive with the sound of Sasquatch!"

The case against cell phones is made fairly early on in this man-in-a-suit thriller. One dumbass teen, on an all-girls and no phones weekend retreat in the mountains, has broken the pre-established rule of NO PHONES. She just can’t go a minute without talking to her new beau. What happens to her when she wanders off from the cabin in search of better reception is justly deserved. The hulking mass of muscle and fur is all you get to see as she is whisked away into the woods. Good riddance to you; Abominable doesn't care about rule-breakers.

It is Rear Window siphoned through a smarter version of Sasquatch and, complete with a solid script and very little CGI, it earns every single one of its scares throughout its running time. Starring Matt McCoy (L.A. Confidential, Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach) as the paraplegic lead character, Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator, The Frighteners) as a grease monkey who decides to take on the beast, Lance Henriksen (Aliens, Millennium) as a dude who likes to kill things, Abominable is a wildly amusing and fierce affair.

The movie also features cameo performances from Dee Wallace (E.T. and Cujo), Paul Gleeson (The Breakfast Club), and special effects superstar Christien Tinsley as the psychotic nurse in charge of McCoy’s recovery.  What happens to him is both hilarious and awfully gruesome.

When the dust (and the fur) settles from the opening attack (not the girl on the phone), this horror film shifts into a more somber tone as Preston Rogers (McCoy), now afraid of the outside, returns to his mountain-home six months after a climbing accident took out his wife and left him permanently handicapped. The most charming presence of his nurse, Otis (Christien Tinsley), is all he has to lean upon. Sadface.  Otis is all about mental abuse and takes any chance he can to belittle the poor guy.  Don't worry, he gets his in the end.

Next door to Preston are a group of visiting girlfriends. Up in the mountains for a weekend getaway, they have no idea the terror that awaits them. Preston, confined to a wheelchair on the upstairs floor, has nothing better to do but look out his back window.  Of course, the girls are completely creeped out. He’s always looking through his binoculars at them.

But it’s not at them.  He’s concerned about all the movements in the trees. Something is out there and he must do everything that he possibly can to keep everyone safe from this hairy bastard once it is revealed to him and to us. Thing is, all he can really do is watch the damn thing get closer and closer to the girls next door.  And just wait until the beast actually gets in the house!

Abominable (2006) - Blu-ray

For those of you who saw the televised version of the movie back when Syfy originally premiered it, know this about MVD’s handling of the movie: this release is an ALL-NEW CUT with improved special effects, all overseen by director Ryan Schifrin and editor Chris Conlee. It is amazingly good.   Fans also get enhanced color timing and color corrections with this release. The reason I write about these neglected films is, thankfully, for reasons like this AWESOME release.  They need attention and, as my proof, this release is an EPIC treatment of a seriously great B-minded movie.

With ample amount of gore – thanks to the meat-eating monster at the center of the tale – and finely-tuned tension, Abominable is a shocking throwback to a time when Hollywood made much better pictures. Not one single minute of this flick is disappointing or unnecessary. Not even the creature, who is introduced in a clever way during the film’s opening attack, fails to excite. Abominable remains one of the better – if not THE best – Bigfoot-minded horror flicks that we currently have.

And, if the closing scene (again, one of the best!!) is any indication, the hills are indeed alive with the sound of Sasquatch!

Even for a night shoot, this one keeps its edges in check. It has dark layers, yes, and those shadows are well-defined and crisp but the new 1.85:1 aspect tatio does not disappoint. Obviously, the film looks better than ever. Crisp contrasts and solid textures lead the charge in this transfer. Colors are solid, with reds being a standout. Blacks are, too. Surprisingly, there's enough fine detail on display to make this seem revelatory. The era-ready color palette looks terrific, too. The disc comes with a new DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround audio.
